What is fake and what is real? Do we notice the difference between what is CGI and practical effects? The answer to that question is yes. Does it bring the feel of realism and make us believe the events happened? The answer to that is no. J.J Abrams wanted Star Wars The Force Awakens to be real to the fans of the franchise and wanted to bring back practical sets to the franchise that we experienced in the Original Trilogy. Now the Original Trilogy yes did have some CGI, but not so much. J.J Abrams took Star Wars back to its old roots of practical sets only using 28 out of 357 scenes for CGI. Unlike the Prequel Trilogy using CGI in almost every single scene, we didn't believe in the Prequel Trilogy like we did of the Original Trilogy. Maybe that is one of the reasons why fans dislike the Prequel Trilogy but sadly those won't go away so we are stuck with them no matter what.
J.J Abrams told this to Collider in this little interview:
“There are obviously an enormous amount of CG effects in the film, and I can’t wait for you to see the combination,” Abrams told Collider. “But it was very important … that the film have a tangible, sort of authentic quality that you believed that these things were actually happening in a real space with real sunlight – if it was an exterior scene – or [that] we could build a big portion of a scene and not have anything be blue screen …”
But of course some of these scenes for the movie has to involve CGI since we cannot build an actual star destroyer and go into space and actually land in it and such (which would be fantastic) CGI had to be involved for space scenes and some in planet scenes. But such as to ground explosions and the tie fighter crashing on the desert, those are practical sets. So is J.J Abrams going about this the right way? The answer to that question is a definite yes because as we all know Star Wars was originally practical effects sets over CGI and J.J Abrams is a big fan of the Original Trilogy and not a big fan of the Prequel Trilogy so we will finally after 32 years since Return of the Jedi, we get the Original Trilogy feel back.
Is anyone comfortable now about The Force Awakens using only 28 CGI scenes out of 357? I can only assume and hope that we all say yes to that question and we can stop holding our breathes on this topic. We have 128 days left to go for December 18th so lets hope we see a couple more trailers in the coming months.
