Today IGN scheduled an interview with Chris Miller to discuss some upcoming films. While details on the upcoming Han Solo Anthology film are kept under wraps, he does make some interesting key comments during the meeting and reveals the challenges that come from recreating the image of such a iconic character.
While Miller was on tour at the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour, where he was on hand to promote Season 2 of The Last Man on Earth, he spoke to IGN about what it’s like taking on the Han Solo film.
IGN: Are you and Phil, every half hour or so, going “We’re making a freaking Star Wars movie!”?
Chris Miller: [Laughs] It is pretty exciting. It’s definitely a childhood dream come true for us.
IGN: I know better than to ask you anything plot-wise, when it comes to Lucasfilm.
Miller: They are super open about just revealing any massive plot point!
IGN: "Tell them act two!”
Miller: So then…!
IGN: But when you’re approaching something that iconic and a character that iconic, do you want to be reverent... or do you not want to be too reverent?
Miller: Oh man, that’s our big challenge, right? It’s a huge pressure. We always try and find something that's gonna make us... give a fire to our bellies and do a really good job. And this feels like there’s a lot of pressure to not screw this up. So we’ve definitely got that motivation and then the rest of it is about trying to give audiences a fresh experience that doesn’t feel like you're just trying to check off some checklist of beats that you’re expecting and make something that feels new and exciting for people, but at the same time honoring what was so great about that character.
IGN: What is it about Han Solo that you think has made him so beloved?
Miller: I could talk to you for a day about why he is the perfect blend of rogue-ish cowboy... Morally ambiguous, but has a clear moral compass. He’s funny, he’s off the cuff… When I was a kid on the playground, fights were about who got to play Han Solo. He’s just one of the best characters ever created.
