It may be time for the Jedi to end, but for director Rian Johnson, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is only the beginning.
Lucasfilm announced that Johnson will be creating, as well as writing and directing a new trilogy set within the Star Wars universe. His producer will be Ram Bergman, a longtime collaborator with Johnson.
“In shepherding this new trilogy, which is separate from the episodic Skywalker saga, Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored,” Lucasfilm and Disney said during a news release.
Johnson added to both older and newer characters' stories, as well as conceived brand new characters to create a story that Lucasfilm and Disney have had nothing but praise for. Lucasfilm president, Kathleen Kennedy has expressed her excitement to see what Johnson could do with a "blank canvas." "He's a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy," Kennedy said.
The announcement of this new trilogy should come as no surprise to fans after Disney and Lucasfilm released their intentions to create a Star Wars movie every year for the foreseeable future. Although no information has been released on this trilogy at this time, Johnson and Bergman were excited to find out they were to add on to the mythology of this cinema giant. "We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi," they said in a joint statement, "Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can't wait to continue with this new series of films."
