The time is almost here for every fan around the world to watch one of the biggest anticipated movies of all time in 3 months, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I think what everyone is really excited for the most is new characters, characters that we have never seen nor heard about before. That is one of the best things about Star Wars in new trilogy's is new species and characters for people to know about and see how they are and such. We are all excited to see Kylo Ren, Rey, Finn, BB-8, General Hux. But the one biggest character that is also so popular right now even in a 3.75 inch or 6 inch figure, Captain Phasma.
Actress Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones) was recently interviewed by Variety about her role as Captain Phasma. In the show Game of Thrones, Christie plays a badass warrior named Brienne of Tarth and semi has some similarities from the Game of Thrones character to Captain Phasma. But Gwendoline Christie assures that the Captain Phasma character is a total different character than any of her previous roles. Christie tells Variety:
"It was very important to J.J. that I was there acting a part, I found it to be a really interesting acting challenge, not just because of what i felt this character was representing - and it was just what I felt, and we talked about it a little bit, but it was never like a manifesto, 'this is what it must be' - and it was exciting to me to have that weight of responsibility taken away, of having to be a certain way as a woman, to have to be mindful in a way that isn't always useful. To have that stripped away was very liberating, and it meant that as an actor I had to focus on other things. I had to focus on what my body was communicating and what exactly my voice is communicating. It becomes about the way in which you hold you hand, the way in which you walk, where your weight lies and what you want that to mean, and I wanted to give the character identity. I thought it was interesting to make something about the character identifiably female in a non-superficial way, and I hope that comes across."
Those are some big words from the actress and so far she is getting me more excited to see more of what she can bring with Captain Phasma. She also says this:
"I don't think many female actors get the opportunity to play a part where they're not having to think about the way their face looks, but I found exactly the same thing with Brienne of Tarth, and that was very liberating, it was great as an actor to work on your skills - that it isn't about holding your head so you look beautiful. It's about what you're transmitting, and to be in service of an idea greater than yourself, whether it's the character's overriding objective or, beyond that, hopefully something more sociopolitical. We have seen an image of [Phasma] and again, it's an unconventional kind of woman exhibiting a kind of strength, but in a very different way to my other two characters."So fans, what do you all think? I think Gwendoline Christie is such an inspiring actress to many people out there including the future women who want to become an actress. She is fit to be in Star Wars, I welcome her into Star Wars, I was lucky to buy the 6 inch Black Series figure of Captain Phasma the other day, I cannot wait for The Force Awakens to see her in action. She is going to be like Boba Fett, popular for so many years and one of the most favorable characters in this new trilogy. Let's just hope that we still get to see Boba Fett again soon (Crossing Fingers). Star Wars premiers December 18th, 2015 and don't forget to mark your calendars for October 19th to go to your select theaters to purchase you advanced tickets to The Force Awakens.
